Newcastle United rocked by injury to Matt Ritchie with winger ruled out until October

Newcastle United midfielder Matt Ritchie has been sidelined for two months after Hamza Choudhury's "horror" challenge in the League Cup tie against Leicester City.

The winger is devastated to be ruled out until at least October and is now facing assessment behind the scenes.

It means Steve Bruce has to rethink his plans at left wing-back but also has Jetro Willems doubtful for the home clash with Watford.

When asked about Ritchie's condition, Bruce said: "It's bad news - it's two months. The kid is in a mess.

"It could have been worse, six months, but it was one of those horror challenges.

"I understand that the lad has apologised.

"What was disappointing was the ref who was very close to it.

"I hope the young lad learns from it, he is a good player.

"Matt is angry but he will get over it and start working."

But Bruce did have better news on Joelinton who should be clear to play against the Hornets.

Speaking about other injuries, Bruce said: "I have doubts on Emil Krafth, Jetro too and Miguel is a bit of a problem.

"Joelinton should be OK."

Bruce also confirmed that Allan Saint-Maximin was out for three weeks after a scan on his hamstring.
