Newcastle United rocked by fresh injury blow to key man

Newcastle United have been rocked by a fresh injury blow to Scotland winger Ryan Fraser.

It is understood that Fraser suffered a new injury in the 1-0 League Cup defeat at Brentford and did not travel to the Etihad Stadium for the clash against Man City.

Fraser had just returned from a hamstring problem which had kept him out of Newcastle and Scotland's fixtures for a month before Christmas.

There is no return date for Fraser after Steve Bruce explained his absence in the North-West last night.

When asked on his omission from the team sheet, Bruce simply said: "Unfortunately, he hurt his groin against Brentford."

Also missing at City was midfielder Jonjo Shelvey who picked up a groin injury.

Bruce said: "Jonjo Shelvey had a groin injury and he is not right, he has played too many games.

“We will see if we can get a few back, once we do I'm sure we will be OK."

It is understood that both Paul Dummett and Jeff Hendrick are feeling under the weather and both sat out against City.
