Newcastle United rival takeover bid 'inspired by FSG success at Liverpool'

The American businessman behind a reported rival takeover bid to buy Newcastle United is said to have been inspired by Liverpool's owners' Anfield success.

John Henry and Tom Werner took charge at Anfield in 2010.

Since then the Reds have succeeded both on and off the pitch under FSG, with the Premier League leaders recently given an estimated value of £2bn.

This model and transformation is said to have inspired ClearTV CEO Henry Mauriss and his backers to launch a £350m bid to buy the Magpies outright from owner Mike Ashley.

The multimillion pound offer is reportedly £50m more than that of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund which is currently being looked at by the Premier League.

The report from Mirror Sport quotes a source close to Mauriss who said: “He has studied the way his fellow countrymen Werner and Henry have successfully rejuvenated Liverpool and made them one of the world’s dominant forces.

“There is the promise of significant investment not only in the squad but also the club’s academy. It’s a fantastic business plan.

“The investor has seen the way Liverpool’s owners have harnessed themselves with the local community and made it a team effort with everyone pulling in the same direction.

"Newcastle have a huge and loyal support.

"It’s a club with massive potential.”
