Newcastle United revive talks to persuade Matty Longstaff to stay

Newcastle United are trying to persuade Matty Longstaff to remain on Tyneside and join up for the first day of pre-season training next week.

The 20-year-old is now a free agent but has not taken up any of the options available to him so far this summer after fresh talks with Serie A side Udinese and newly promoted Premier League outfit Leeds United.

German club Schalke 04 also have an interest in the Academy product.

Toon boss Steve Bruce is eager for the midfielder to remain at St James' Park after handing him his Premier League debut last season.

But since then talks between Longstaff and his representatives have stalled.

Bruce has kept in contact with Longstaff over the summer months and urged him to stay at United.

Despite his contract coming to an end, Newcastle want Longstaff to join them at their UK training camp and take part in pre-season.

Newcastle are hoping to add a couple of additions to their squad in time for their summer schedule with Burnley's out of contract Jeff Hendrick a target and Wigan defender Antonee Robinson also a player that the Magpies have checked out, although Fulham and Sheffield United are also battling for the American's signature.

Bruce has already declared that he anticipates a "difficult summer" caused by the virus pandemic and clubs being forced to work with a limited budget.
