Newcastle United reportedly secure first signing of the summer transfer window

Newcastle United are closing in on their first signing of the summer, according to reports.

The Sunday Mirror claim that the Magpies have won the race to sign Celtic's Kristoffer Ajer - and for just £6m.

Head coach Steve Bruce is keen to bolster his backline, and the report states that Ajer wants to work with the Premier League winner.

Ajer's deal at Celtic runs out next summer, so Celtic seemingly have cashed in now other than losing him for nothing in 12 months time - much to the dismay of their supporters.

The 23-year-old has won three league titles with Celtic plus the League Cup and Scottish Cup three times apiece too.

United are likely to move on Florian Lejeune and Yoshinori Muto plus others to help fund their summer transfer budget.

While Fabian Schar and Paul Dummett are expected to sign new deals at the club, there is less certainty over Federico Fernandez whose deal runs out this summer.

The Magpies have also been linked with QPR's Rob Dickie in whom they had an interest in last summer while he was at Oxford, but it Ajer who has topped the list for Bruce and his scouting staff.
