Newcastle United reportedly offered chance to sign versatile Paris Saint-Germain defender

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly offered Newcastle United the chance to sign defender Abdou Diallo in January.

French outlet Foot Mercato reported that Newcastle hold an interest in the Senegalese international with speculation that Diallo’s future in Paris is in the balance, with the likes of Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe and Sergio Ramos all currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

Newcastle are likely to be busy in next month’s transfer window as they eye reinforcements to help stave off the threat of relegation, with the Magpies currently sat 19th in the Premier League, with just one win so far this season.

And it is in defence where Eddie Howe is likely to prioritise as his side have conceded the joint most number of goals across the division (34, alongside Norwich City), although Newcastle have played a game less.

Several pundits across the media, including Chris Sutton on 5Live’s Monday Night Club, think Newcastle may have to sign an entirely new backline in order to avoid the drop.

Diallo could be a useful first addition for the Magpies as he can play both in the centre of defence and at left back, meaning he can provide a strong option in multiple positions.

Despite the abundance of options at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal, the 25-year-old has still played a fairly regular role so far this season in Paris.

He has started nine of PSG’s 16 league games over the course of the campaign, seven of which came at left back, even with Nuno Mendes and Juan Bernat as their more preferred options.

Diallo has also spent time at the likes of Borussia Dortmund and AS Monaco during his career and would therefore bring plenty of top-flight experience to Howe’s squad.
