Newcastle United reportedly interested in bringing Barcelona executive to St James' Park

The departing Barcelona technical secretary Ramon Planes is reportedly a target for Newcastle United.

Following the continued upheaval at Camp Nou, the Spaniard is said to be considering other projects abroad.

According to Marca, this has put the new board at Newcastle on alert as they still look to appoint someone in the role between the owners and the manager.

Lee Charnley, who was appointed managing director under Mike Ashley, remains at the club but his future is still very much up in the air.

The appointment of a new technical secretary would likely see him relieved of his duties as he was only initially kept onboard to assist the takeover.

There are, however, potential other roles that will become available for Planes as Liverpool could also be in the market for someone of his stature and experience.

With the Reds’ sporting director, Michael Edwards, leaving at the end of the season, that might open a pathway for the Barcelona man to get involved at Anfield.

The advantage that Newcastle have is that they would be able to bring Planes to the Premier League as soon as he cuts ties in Catalonia.

The wait until next season may deter him from a move to Merseyside as well as the difference in transfer plans between the two sides.

Liverpool remain shrewd operators when it comes to recruitment while the Magpies will have plenty of money to spend over the next few seasons.

Planes’ record of acquisitions during his time at Barcelona might not fill Newcastle supporters with much hope but he is likely to have more freedom on Tyneside.

Despite the Spanish giants bringing in Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann under his supervision, he was instrumental in signing both Pedri and Ronald Araujo for less than £6m combined.

His experience of operating at a top club would be vital for Newcastle as they look to bridge the gap between themselves and the so-called ‘big six’ in the long term.
