Newcastle United release update on Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of Burton Albion clash

Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin is unlikely to feature on Friday night at Burton Albion for the second friendly in a row.

The Frenchman has been sidelined by an unspecified "illness" and also missed the 1-1 draw away to Rotherham United at the New York Stadium earlier this week.

Saint-Maximin may only get one more opportunity to get minutes in the tank and that depends on whether Norwich City are able to fulfil their fixture at St James' Park in early August.

Norwich have dropped out of two friendly games in recent times due to Covid issues with clashes against Sheffield United and Coventry City scrapped.

Steve Bruce will again be without Karl Darlow against Burton meaning Freddie Woodman and Mark Gillespie will feature between the posts at the Pirelli Stadium.

A short statement appeared on United's website saying: "Allan Saint-Maximin is still poorly while Karl Darlow continues to recover at home having tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this month."

The positive news for Bruce was that Joelinton was back in training after missing the last two games with a thigh problem suffered against York City.

Joelinton could play against the Brewers on Friday night as Newcastle look to wrap up their road trips for pre-season.
