Newcastle United release image of St James' Park with Sports Direct signs now down

Newcastle United have released an image of St James' Park with all of the Sports Direct signs removed.

The Magpies posted a tweet at teatime after ground staff removed all 150 signs that had been advertising the budget retail sports shop for much of the last decade.

This week Chronicle Live confirmed that work was underway to take down the signs put in place by Mike Ashley's company as well as fresh pictures of the hoardings dumped in a skip.

St James' is now looking fresh with signs taken down from the Gallowgate End, Leazes End and East Stand after tireless work from club staff.

Co-owner Amanda Staveley has previously said: "The Sports Direct signs I'm looking forward to coming down. It's a slight frustration when I go into the stadium and I try and take a picture which doesn't have Sports Direct in it."

Ashley had infuriated fans a decade ago when renaming St James' Park the Sports Direct Arena but fans never accepted the change of venue name.

Fan Neil Howard tweeted: "Beautiful, simply beautiful. Well done for taking down those hideous signs."
