Newcastle United refuse to budge after being quoted huge fees for summer targets

Newcastle United will not be swayed by any big demands from rival clubs when it comes to summer shopping.

Since the season finished, Chronicle Live understands that Newcastle have been quoted at the higher end of the market on several targets including James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai. The Foxes are sticking to their guns on an asking price of more than £60million on Maddison despite his contract running down.

RB Leipzig star Szoboszlai has a release clause of £60million too but none of the interested parties in the Hungary captain have activated it so far this summer. United's valuation of the Hungarian star is a little less than the asking price.

There is now talk that Szoboszalai's clause has a validity period on it but his representatives have yet to indulge despite being approached for comment. However, while Eddie Howe and the recruitment team have put in plenty of work on whittling down their shortlist, it is an extensive one and Newcastle are prepared to move on if they don't get the value they are looking for. There is no panic behind the scenes despite the window being open for over a week.

And the feeling around the club is that July will be extremely busy as departures elsewhere will spark a domino effect across Europe and other targets will come into play. Howe and his team are working towards strict FFP rules but what is clear is that there is no set budget on Tyneside.

United know that things can change with senior departures - with Jamaal Lascelles linked with a move to Luton - and there is still some squad reshaping to be made. The word from Leicester last night was that the Foxes won't budge on their demands for England international Maddison.

Quite wisely, the star was whisked past the media zone last night and shielded from any questions from Press on his future. Maddison put in a solid performance against Malta in the 4-0 win on Friday night but did not appear against North Macedonia.

Talk from the capital was night strengthening that Maddison prefers Tottenham Hotspur. But the view from the Maddison camp is without a bid on the table from either Spurs or Newcastle yet, he doesn't have a decision to make at this point.
