Newcastle United recruitment staff working from three different summer shortlists

Newcastle United are working from three different transfer shortlists ahead of what is certain to be another busy summer at St James' Park.

The Magpies could yet end up in the Champions League, the Europa League or even the Europa Conference League. By the same token, they could end up empty-handed if they slide out of the top seven.

United's summer transfer kitty could increase vastly if they manage to make the top four but they may have a more modest budget if they end up in the Europa or Europa Conference League. Howe is well aware of the uncertainty in terms of transfers with head of scouting Andy Howe and chief scout Steve Nickson currently assessing options for various outcomes.

Howe told Chronicle Live: "It's a difficult one. Depending on what we achieve.

"If we achieve anything, it will affect what are income will be. Financial Fair Play is a very difficult thing is to work out, what we will and won't be able to do.

"All I will say is FFP will impact us again regardless of what competition we are involved in."

Howe watched on as Manchester City dismantled RB Leipzig 7-0 this week as Erling Haaland helped himself to five goals in the knockout stages. Howe was asked whether Newcastle are going to be ready for that step up in class next season if they make the Champions League.

Howe added: "It is all hypothetical for us at the moment. But I certainly enjoyed watching that performance from him and how to score goals, a brilliant display.

"But it is certainly something we are not directly looking at in terms of the Champions League at this moment in time."
