Newcastle United receive Edinson Cavani boost ahead of facing Manchester United next weekend

New Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani is unlikely to be available to make his Red Devils debut against Newcastle later this month.

The Uruguayan forward, 33, joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side on a free transfer on transfer deadline day and will be looking to replicate his excellent goalscoring record in Italy and France in the Premier League.

Cavani left PSG in the summer after seven seasons in the French capital, and it was thought he would make his debut at St James' Park with Anthony Martial suspended for their trip to Tyneside.

However, Cavani could be forced to self-isolate for 14 days according to The Times, meaning he would still be in quarantine when the match takes place between the two sides next weekend.

Under government regulations, anyone arriving into the UK from France has to quarantine for 14 days unless they are an elite athlete who has been living in a secure bubble. Paul Pogba, for example, will be eligible to play once he returns from international duty with the France national team.

However, since Cavani was a free agent and was without a club he has been living among the general population in Paris. Manchester United are seeking clarity on the matter but it means they could be left shorthanded up front for their trip to the North East.

Cavani, of course, was linked with a move to Newcastle amid takeover talks with Amanda Staveley's consortium that had the backing of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and the Reuben Brothers.

In fact, back in May, Cavani's camp actively talked up links with the Magpies' 'project' but, ultimately, the lucrative takeover deal fell through when the consortium pulled out of talks after the Premier League's Owners and Directors' Test delayed making a decision over whether to approve the takeover bid.
