Newcastle United recall Matty Bondswell after baffling Shrewsbury Town loan

Newcastle United have recalled left-back Matty Bondswell after a baffling loan deal with Shrewsbury Town. The former Red Bull Leipzig was understood to have been fit and available throughout his loan but Steve Cotterill opted to overlook the promising 19-year-old.

The League One side are sitting in 15th place and even with the Shrews in comfortable winning positions, Cotterill did not take a look at Bondswell. The situation has resulted in Newcastle losing patience with the third tier side with Bondswell recalled.

Bondswell was named on the team sheet for tonight's game against West Bromwich Albion and thrown straight into the action. Bondswell will now look to contribute to Elliott Dickman's Premier League 2 play-off push.

The former Nottingham Forest junior made his first-team debut last summer under Steve Bruce when he came on as substitute in the 3-2 win over Doncaster Rovers.

A United statement on Bondswell read: "Newcastle United have recalled teenage defender Matt Bondswell from his loan spell with Shrewsbury Town.

"The Nottingham-born left-back, who joined the Magpies in March 2021 following his departure from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, had joined the League One club in January for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign.

2However, the 19-year-old was unable to make his EFL debut for the Salop, featuring as an unused substitute in 11 consecutive league matches, and has returned to Tyneside where he will link up with United's under-23 side."
