Newcastle United practice penalties ahead of Premier League Asia Trophy kick-off in China

Newcastle United finished a training session in the shadow of the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre stadium with a penalty shoot-out.

Players lined up to practice spot-kicks ahead of the opening game of the Premier League Asia Trophy against Wolves on Wednesday morning.

There were smiles as Javier Manquillo stepped up to take a penalty with his team-mates watching on with smirks on their faces.

Captain Jamaal Lascelles, and Newcastle United's U23 shot-stopper Nathan Harker were also pictured trying their luck from 12 yards.

United fans with a good memory will recount that the last time the club participated in this competition - they lost 5-4 on penalties to Chelsea.

The game, back in 2003, had finished 0-0 and the shoot-out ended in sudden death as Jermaine Jenas tried to chip Claudio Cudicini only to put it over the bar.

Sir Bobby Robson was left raging.

"All players have the right to take penalties the way they think," said Robson. "I will not criticise if they miss them.

"I have lost a World Cup semi-final in similar circumstances.

"I will never complain about players missing penalties and have the utmost sympathy for them.

"But in JJ's case I think it was outrageous. It is obscene what he's done and you can't do that.

"We have spent hour after hour together on shooting.

"But he has made a mistake and I have told him that. I have told him he has been unprofessional.

"He will learn from that, but he has been part of a Newcastle team that has worked really hard.

"He is a good young pro, and he will learn from that.

"In the year we've had him he's made good strides but he has made an outrageous error and he will have to learn."
