Newcastle United poised to make their first signing of the summer

Newcastle United are poised to make their first signing of the summer in soon to be out of contract goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.

Gillespie has left Motherwell and is expected to sign a three-year deal with the Magpies as third choice shot-stopper next term.

He is understood to be a replacement for Rob Elliot.

Steve Bruce is believed to be looking at other free transfers for next season and it is the current regime who are still calling the shots on recruitment.

Bruce said last week: “They are out of contract and you can speak to them whenever you want. “That has been on the agenda.”

Gillespie, now 28, was on United’s books as an Academy player.

He made 160 appearances for Carlisle earlier in his career before playing more than 50 games for Motherwell.
