Newcastle United players give insight into new routines amid coronavirus pandemic

Newcastle United players have started training at home after football operations at the club's training ground were shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, the authorities decided that professional football in England would be suspended until at least April 3 after Arsenal manager Mikel Artera and Chelsea player Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for COVID-19 and a number of top-flight teams went into self-isolation.

While none of Newcastle's players or staff had coronavirus, or had exhibited any symptoms, they were told to stay away from Benton for at least a fortnight as a precaution because the virus could obviously spread rapidly in a confined space.

The decision was made ahead of Prime Minister Boris Johnson advising everyone in the UK to work from home when possible on Monday.

The Magpies had been preparing for the possibility of games being suspended for weeks and individual training programmes had been put together for the players so they could maintain their fitness levels at their homes.

The players' progress can be tracked remotely by club staff via GPS to ensure they are keeping on top of everything.

Allan Saint-Maximin, Andy Carroll and Emil Krafth were among those who took to social media on Monday to give a glimpse into their new daily routines.

Saint-Maximin, wearing Newcastle's third kit, hit his in-house gym with his partner; Carroll had his son, Wolf Nine, keeping a close eye on him; and Krafth was preparing to do some gym work in his garage.

Valentino Lazaro, meanwhile, has followed in the footsteps of team-mate Florian Lejeune and a host of footballers around the world in doing the staying at home skills challenge after his own home workout.

The challenge sees players do a series of keepie uppies with a toilet roll and then dare their followers, friends and team-mates to follow suit.
