Newcastle United players are sending the right message ahead of pre-season return

A number of Newcastle United players have been putting in the hard yards in recent weeks ahead of returning to Benton for pre-season training.

Although Miguel Almiron, Christian Atsu and Henri Saivet have obviously been excused because of their international commitments, the majority of the Magpies' squad will be back at the training ground on Thursday for their first day back.

After more than seven weeks off, following that 4-0 win at Fulham, it remains to be seen who takes charge of that session on July 4 following Rafa Benitez's departure.

The club had no plans to make any formal approaches for Benitez's successor while he was still under contract so it looks set to fall to a caretaker to put the players through their paces.

However, regardless of who is going to be in charge, a number Newcastle players are keen to prove a point this summer.

Jonjo Shelvey did up to three running sessions a day in Dubai in the immediate close season before returning to the club's training ground at the start of June - a whole month ahead of schedule.

A number of Shelvey's team-mates have enlisted personal trainers to give them a head start ahead of their return to training.

Fabian Schar, Isaac Hayden, Joselu, Jacob Murphy, Yoshinori Muto, Achraf Lazaar, Jamie Sterry and Rolando Aarons are among those who have been working hard across the globe in recent weeks.

Even Florian Lejeune, who is continuing his rehabilitation after suffering a serious knee injury in April, made sure he was keeping active while on holiday in Mykonos.
