Newcastle United player ratings: Shelvey swipes headlines but defenders star again

Newcastle United salvaged a late point thanks to a Jonjo Shelvey stunner at St James' Park.

The Newcastle midfielder lashed home after Christian Atsu teed him up with a neat free-kick to cancel out Kevin De Bruyne's simply superb strike which looked like it had won all three points for the visitors.

It capped an enthralling early kick off where the visitors dominated the ball but Newcastle defended well and countered when required.

The Citizens registered 91% possession before the first ten minutes was out but their opening goal had a huge slice of fortune as it bobbled in the box to Raheem Sterling to pull the trigger. David Silva's slick interplay with the England forward had fashioned the opening as Newcastle were undone.

At that point it looked like the game was going to go the way most expected it to but Newcastle's response was impressive.

Miguel Almiron cut in from the left to tee up Jetro Willems, who slammed past Ederson to bring St James' Park to life.

Man City struggled to find a way through in the second period before De Bruyne's goal - but it wasn't the final act. Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings.

Martin Dubravka 9

Beaten by Sterling’s strike but alert and alive to everything else. Took the sting out of another thumping effort from Sterling. A double save in the second half and numerous claims helped grab a point. Man of the match in a competive field.

Javier Manquillo 8

Left with the difficult task of looking after Sterling and Mendy. Did it well and won free-kick for equaliser.

Ciaran Clark 8

Made eight clearances in a solid shift.

Federico Fernandez  9

Some crucial interventions. An excellent display against some of the world’s big hitters.10 clearances and four interceptions.

Paul Dummett 8

Handed another chance after Villa. Looked more motivated with Fabian Schar breathing down the neck of defensive colleagues. Rose to the challenge against City.

Jetro Willems 8

Another goal against one of the big boys. Lovely finish but also brought the best out of Saint-Maximin.

A stunning equaliser to rescue a point. Battled hard but wasted two free-kicks earlier in the game, Afforded 33 touches but shielded the ball well.

Plundered through 69 minutes without having a shot. Did win six aerial balls and some free-kicks.

Allan Saint-Maximin 8

The French winger dazzled City with some sublime skills. Went off after being chopped to the ground.
