Newcastle United player ratings: Superb Shelvey leads the way for marvellous Magpies

Magnificent Newcastle United stunned West Ham to earn a big win at the London Stadium.

The Magpies had been disappointing against Wolves last week but blew away those memories with a superb first half which saw goals from centre-backs Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez.

But they could have been four up with Allan Saint-Maximin, who was thrilling once again, and Miguel Almiron missing one on ones. And Jonjo Shelvey smacked the bar on his recall.

The midfielder then scored with a wonderful free-kick before Fabian Balbuena pulled one back for West Ham and then Robert Snodgrass scored in the 90th minute to make it a nervy finish.

But .

Here is how Lee Ryder scored the players.

Martin Dubravka 8

Key first half saves to deny Yarmolenko and Balbuena and cleared his lines excellently to bounce back from mistake against Wolves.

DeAndre Yedlin 7

Worked hard and pumped in a couple of crosses. Played his part.

Federico Fernandez 8

Netted a brilliant header to make it 2-0 but made a series of winning tackles and made 12 clearances. Deserved adulation at the end and threw his shirt into away end.

Jamaal Lascelles 7

Made 10 clearances in the end. Steady enough but nobody enjoyed late scare.

Ciaran Clark 8

Has had to wait for his chance but his relishing it now. Super header to open the scores. Some key blocks in second half.

Jetro Willems 8

Had been poor in recent weeks but looked at it today. Fantastic cross for the second goal.

Miguel Almiron 7

Still searching for that first goal and missed a chance with the goal yawning, but had West Ham sweating with dangerous runs. Should have netted after ASM pull back and had chance in stoppage time.

Isaac Hayden 8

Composed and calm in the middle, almost played in ASM for fine effort when clean through.

Won free-kick that led to Shelvey’s blockbuster.

Jonjo Shelvey 9

Helped set up two first goals before hammering home second half free-kick. 49 touches and a very influential performance

Allan Saint-Maximin 8

Could have had the game wrapped up by half-time but I will give him benefit of the doubt with the two misses.

Two runs one on one and late effort before half-time that required fine save by Roberto Demonstrated his array of tricks and flicks in the second half to take the pressure off for United.

Joelinton 8

Always there to demand the ball, assist for Clark’s header. Held the ball up well and wasted time efficiently to help get the win.

Subs

Christian Atsu (for Saint-Maximin 77)

Paul Dummett (for Willems 87)

Andy Carroll (for Joelinton 90)
