Newcastle United player ratings: Defensive lapse costs underwhelming Magpies

Newcastle United suffered a defeat in the opening day of the new Premier League season.

There were some bright signs in the first half as Jonjo Shelvey forced Bern Leno to tip his strong drive onto the post but United were underwhelming in the second period. A lapse of concentration between Paul Dummett and substitute Jetro Willems let in Arsenal and Pierre Aubameyang chipped over Martin Dubravka.

United's response was to send on sub Allan Saint-Maximin who created a couple of chances but Newcastle never really looked likely to hit back.

Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings.

Martin Dubravka 7

Superb block to deny Aubameyang. Left well and truly exposed for Aubameyang’s strike before the hour.

Javier Manquillo 7

Pressed high up the field and caused Arsenal a few problems. Has competition for right-back spot with arrival of Emil Krafth but deserves another start.

Jamaal Lascelles 6

Distributed the ball well from the back in first half. Caught napping for Arsenal opener.

Fabian Schar 7

Recovered from knock to clear United’s lines effectively. Some key interventions.

Paul Dummett 6

Got the nod ahead of Fernández. Some full blooded challenges throughout but his poor pass to Willems let Arsenal in.

Matt Ritchie 8

Bounced back from hamstring trouble with a snappy display. Didn’t hold back with challenges and ended game in midfield.

Almost fed Joelinton for opener.

Sean Longstaff  7

Bright and breezy display. On hand to win key headers but fizzled out in second half.

(Sub Allan Saint-Maximin 66 - 7 Got crowd off their seat with some good bursts forward)

Isaac Hayden 7

Some immaculate tackles against old club. A real crowd favourite these days.

Jonjo Shelvey 7

Really unlucky with shot Leno turned on to post in first half. Came off before the hour and United lost their shape.

(Sub Jetro Willems 53 6 - A tough introduction to the Premier League, but recovered to show some decent touches)

Miguel Almiron 7

Some decent runs but little in the way of end product. Booked for diving early on.

Joelinton  7

Had a couple of clear glimpses of goal. United need to get him on the ball more. Unable to find breakthrough in second half.
