Newcastle United player ratings: Magpies thrashed in Manchester as reality hits home

Newcastle United were taken apart by Manchester City as their unbeaten run was ended by rampant hosts.

The Magpies have earned plenty of credit for their performances since lockdown ended but this was very poor, with an under-strength Newcastle given a footballing lesson by the Citizens.

The seeds for the defeat were sown in the opening minutes as Gabriel Jesus swept home after a flowing minute after just two minutes. Riyad Mahrez doubled the advantage with a clinical shot and Matt Ritchie's attempted clearance - which deflected off Federico Fernandez - made it three.

David Silva's wonderful free-kick made it four as Newcastle collapsed in the second period and Raheem Sterling scored an injury time goal to complete the misery.

It was a sobering evening for Newcastle's second string.

Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings .

Man of the match: Nobody.

Martin Dubravka 5

Left exposed for much of the night. One fine save to deny Silva but not his finest hour.

DeAndre Yedlin 3

Facing an uncertain future and looked like his next move was weighing on his mind.

Emil Krafth 5

Shunted into unfamiliar centre-back role. Made a host of clearances and can't be blamed after giving it a go out of position.

Federico Fernandez 3

Suffered a nightmare in truth. Out of position for a couple of goals and ended up on the scoresheet at the wrong end.

Danny Rose 5

Tried his best to keep some shape in the back four.

Matt Ritchie 4

Didn't look fit after recent injury.

Jonjo Shelvey 4

Pushed into an attacking role but unable to make much of an impact.

Fabian Schar 5

Weighed in with four interceptions but, like the team, struggled.

Nabil Bentaleb 3

A couple of neat tackles but struggled overall. Gifted City a fifth goal.

Valentino Lazaro 3

Lost the ball for the second goal. After looking sharp in recent games this was a drop in standards.

Joelinton 4

Watched on wistfully from the bench after being taken off. Stranded in attack as Newcastle struggled to win the ball.

Subs

Javier Manquillo 5 (for Lazaro 66)

United probably missed him from the start.

Dwight Gayle 5 (for Joelinton 66)

Barely got a kick.

Matty Longstaff 5 (for Shelvey 66)

After months on the sidelines in the Premier League this was not the big chance he has been waiting for with the game gone before being called off bench.

Christian Atsu (for Ritchie 83)

Yoshinori Muto (for Krafth 83)

*Subs must play 15 minutes
