Newcastle United player ratings: Krafth struggles as Magpies battle in vain

Newcastle United were beaten at Anfield as a bright start came to nothing for the Magpies.

Liverpool have enjoyed a perfect start to the Premier League campaign but Newcastle rocked them when Jetro Willems rifled past Adrian.

The Reds were struggling at that point but the match turned on errors from United - Emil Krafth, Christian Atsu and Martin Dubravka won't want to see the first two goals - and the introduction of Roberto Firmino, who replaced Divock Origi.

Saido Mane was Newcastle's executioner as he bagged two goals before half-time; the first a wonderful curling finish and the second a more simple tap-in after Dubravka failed to commit.

Mo Salah made it three after Emil Krafth fired a simple chance over the bar.

Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings.

Martin Dubravka 7

Seemed to get the benefit of the doubt from fans as they chanted his name after Mane’s second goal. On hand to keep out Firmino and others in the second half.

Emil Krafth 6

Felt the full force of Robertson in build-up to equaliser. Missed golden chance on 55 minutes before being hooked for final stages.

Jamaal Lascelles 7

Tried to keep Liverpool at bay. Seven clearances and two blocked crosses.

Fabian Schar 6

Started day well with part in the goal but not his best outing with the international fortnight playing a part at Anfield. Below par afternoon capped off with injury at the end.

Paul Dummett 7

Kept it simple for large parts. 10 clearances but couldn’t keep European champions at bay on his own.

Jetro Willems 7

A blistering start with wonder goal. Influential enough with 41 touches.

Isaac Hayden 7

Battled for the cause. Half a dozen crunch tackles and played through the pain barrier.

Jonjo Shelvey 7

Tried something different when he could. Sadly his invention couldn’t end this awful run.

Christian Atsu 7

A strange day, assisted for the goal but lost possession for second goal. Almost put one on a plate for Krafth.

Miguel Almiron 6

Full of running but didn’t manage a shot. One good chance in first half but just one cross.

Joelinton 7

No chances or clear-cut moments but held the ball up very well. Won eight aerial balls no less.

Subs

Javier Manquillo 6 (for Krafth 67)

Didn’t make much impact.

Yoshinori Muto 5 (for Almiron 67)

See above.

Fede Fernandez (for Schar 80)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to gain a mark.
