Newcastle United player ratings: Dreadful Magpies are going backwards quickly

Newcastle United were beaten by Crystal Palace on another day to forget in South London.

Patrick van Aanholt's free-kick gave the Eagles - who were out of form themselves - a deserved win on another day when Newcastle didn't do enough to win.

They created few chances and Palace should have had more goals. Martin Dubravka's excellent saves from Scott Dann and Gary Cahill prevented Palace from taking an earlier lead - but van Aanholt's free-kick gave the Eagles all three points.

In the second half Newcastle failed to conjure much of a response and then Valentino Lazaro was sent off trying to prevent Wilfried Zaha from scoring a second.

It was dreadful stuff and Newcastle are free-falling. Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings .

Martin Dubravka 7

Kept the score down to just one after facing 18 goal attempts. Two great saves to deny Dann and Cahill.

Valentino Lazaro 3

His adaption to the Premier League continues to be tough. Given the runaround and his day capped by late red card.

Jamaal Lascelles 4

Struggled to inspire the team to a fight-back.

Fabian Schar 6

Blotted copy book by conceding free-kick but almost equalised to make up for it.

Federico Fernandez 4

Struggled to cope with Palace front-line at times.

Danny Rose 5

Started off rather well but seemed to lose energy and ideas as the game wore on. A couple of early crosses before Palace took control.

Nabil Bentaleb 6

Decent enough on the ball but failed to pick out any clear openings.

Sean Longstaff 5

Managed 65 passes but lacked quality in the closing stages.

Miguel Almiron 5

Some good defensive work but Newcastle failed to get him on the ball from an offensive point of view. Didn’t manage a shot all game before being hooked.

Allan Saint-Maximin 7

Looked the most likely for Newcastle. Unlucky with attempted chip but team-mates didn’t latch on to his balls into the box.

Joelinton 5

Unlucky with effort tipped away by Guatita. But not looking anything like a £40million player.

Subs

Matt Ritchie 6 (for Rose 69)

At least showed some passion.

Dwight Gayle 5 (for Almiron 69)

Managed five touches and no shots.Starved of service.
