Newcastle United player ratings: Magpies fail to spark as Dubravka makes his point

Newcastle United and Brighton played out the dullest of draws on the South Coast.

The Magpies are already safe and the Seagulls were as good as before kick off, which resulted in a low intensity contest between two teams playing out their campaigns.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce had opted against handing Kell Watts a debut and the Magpies lined up with a safety-first attitude.

And in truth there were few chances: Pascal Gross went close for the hosts while Andy Carroll's late header was Newcastle's best opportunity.

Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings.

Martin Dubravka 8

Produced a series of first class saves to bank another clean sheet and a point for Newcastle.

The hands down candidate for man of the match on the South Coast.

Javier Manquillo 7

Prodded and probed Brighton down the right-hand side to no avail. Always

Emil Krafth 7

Can't really be faulted after being thrown in out of position. Made six clearances to help preserve clean sheet.

Federico Fernandez 6

Did what he had to do.

Danny Rose 6

Held it together in more of a central role.

Matt Ritchie 6

Recovered from shaky first half after picking up yellow card and nearly conceding a penalty.

Nabil Bentaleb 6

Nicked a couple of interceptions but nothing remarkable aside.

Jonjo Shelvey 7

Grew into the game and found a few holes in Brighton defence. Certainly had two big targets to pick out when Carroll and Joelinton arrived on the scene. Almost powered through late on and was denied by deflection.

Allan Saint-Maximin 7

Bearing in mind United struggled for possession, the French star was probably the biggest threat for an hour. Managed 34 touches overall.

Miguel Almiron 6

Could have snatched it with a late chance. Not his night.

Dwight Gayle 6

Worked hard and managed three goal attempts, the best coming at the end of the first half.

Subs

Andy Carroll 6 (for Gayle 73)

Missed a real sitter but offered more presence.

Joelinton 6 (for Saint-Maximin 73)

Almost slipped in Shelvey to win it.

Valentino Lazaro (for Almiron 85)
