Newcastle United player ratings: Goal hero Miguel Almiron leads the way as Magpies hit top half

Newcastle United started their Christmas programme with a flourish as Miguel Almiron scored his first Premier League goal.

It was a moment to lift the roof off St James' Park as Newcastle won a game that was threatening to turn into a drab 0-0 draw.

The Magpies started well and fashioned chances through Isaac Hayden and Almiron but their final ball too often let them down as the game seemed to meander towards a goalless finish.

But Almiron's excellent half volley, profiting from Andy Carroll's knock down, means it was an afternoon to remember on Tyneside.

Palace created a few decent chances with Luka Milivojevic's free-kick that flashed wide their best opportunity. Martin Dubravka had to be alert to stop Wilfried Zaha.

Newcastle are up to 9th and have 25 points, which is far superior to where many would have felt Steve Bruce would have United at this stage.

Here's how Lee Ryder rated the players .

Martin Dubravka 9

Came to United’s rescue time after time again. One of the biggest bargains, at just £4million, ever signed by the club in their Premier League years. Held his nerve as 16 efforts flew towards his goal.

Javier Manquillo 8

Kept Wilfried Zaha quiet as he restricted the danger man to a quiet afternoon.

Fabian Schar 8

Weighed in with the cross for Almiron’s winner.

Federico Fernandez 8

Another steady shift that included five clearances. Has never looked back after recall.

Florian Lejeune 9

A sparkling display. 78 touches and five immaculate tackles.

Paul Dummett 8

Helped pile on the pressure and was very much the outlet in first half.

Isaac Hayden 6

His day never really got any better after slipping over when clean through early on. Just 21 touches. Hooked just after the hour mark.

Jonjo Shelvey 8

Certainly tried a few different ideas to open the scores. But a steady shift in the middle.

Miguel Almiron 8

At last! A wonder goal which was fully deserved after a hard-working afternoon.

Joelinton 4

One blocked shot. Very little presence. Another blank sheet. Getting to the stage where some people feel sorry for him now.

Andy Carroll 8

Timely flick for Almiron’s winner. Kept battling away and another 90 minutes in the tank.

Subs

Sean Longstaff 7 (for Hayden 64)

Helped push for the winner with hard working display.

Dwight Gayle (for Joelinton 77)

DeAndre Yedlin (for Dummett 90)
