Newcastle United player ratings: Dismal day as Brighton thrash the Magpies

Newcastle United were left shellshocked as a rampant Brighton side claimed all three points at St James' Park.

A Neal Maupay double gave the Seagulls a commanding lead within eight minutes, and a late Aaron Connolly strike secured all three points for the visitors

Here's how Lee Ryder rated the United players after a nightmare display against Brighton:

Karl Darlow 4

Left exposed for the most part by his defence. Could only watch on as a dozen shots rained on his goal.

Javier Manquillo 4

Looked like three games in a week had caught up with him.

Jamaal Lascelles 4

The skipper won't be happy with this performance. Had no answer to Brighton's fantastic early start. At fault for Connolly's clincher as he stood off.

Federico Fernandez 4

Backpedalling for most of the second half as Brighton searched for a third.

Jamal Lewis 4

Bombarded early by Lamptey before being knocked out of the game literally.

Jeff Hendrick 4

Moved from left to right and into the middle. Never had chance to settle down. Not the greatest home debut.

Isaac Hayden 4

Did win five aerial balls in the middle but not at his best.

Jonjo Shelvey 4

Almost slipped in Wilson in the first half. A booking picked up in frustration. Poor show overall.

Allan Saint-Maximin 3

Had no answers to stop Lamptey and conceded an early penalty. Bruce moved him to the opposite flank in the tactical tweak. Bad day summed up with injury after 33 minutes after managing just 14 touches.

Andy Carroll 4

An ineffective display with Brighton easily picking the ball up in and around the big striker. No surprise to see his number up after half-time.

Callum Wilson 4

Should have scored on his home debut. One shot overall and just 21 touches. Below par.

Subs

Ryan Fraser 5 (for Saint-Maximin 33)

Still not close to full fitness and it showed

Miguel Almiron 6 (for Andy Carroll 46)

Livened it up for a while but was left with far too much to do.

Joelinton 3 (for Shelvey 72)

Managed eight touches without getting anywhere near the goal.
