Newcastle United player ratings on another dire day for Magpies

Insipid Newcastle United were beaten for the second successive game as they allowed Chelsea to blow them away.

The Blues got on the scoresheet early as Federico Fernandez diverted through his own net under pressure from Ben Chilwell but United could have been two down by then as Karl Darlow was required to pull off a couple of excellent stops.

Newcastle managed just 18% possession in the first half as they failed to impose themselves on the match. Things improved slightly in the second half as United missed glorious chances from Isaac Hayden and Joelinton but Chelsea racked up the majority of the chances.

And Tammy Abraham notched a second to consign United to a deserved defeat.

Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings .

Karl Darlow 7

Kept the score down after facing 14 shots.

Javier Manquillo 3

Not a great return to the side with Chelsea pouring down the right.

Jamaal Lascelles 5

Some last gasp clearances. But unable to stem the flow of flow of Chelsea attacks. Taken off with an injury at half-time.

Federico Fernandez 3

An own goal to kick off and spent game chasing defenders.

Ciaran Clark 5

One important clearance to deny Werner.

Jamal Lewis 5

Tried to get the ball into the middle. Fizzled out somewhat towards the end.

Sean Longstaff 7

Newcastle's best player outfield by a mile. A strong display amidst a messy team performance. So unfortunate to hit the bar.

Isaac Hayden 3

Picked up first yellow card and was on a tightrope

Jacob Murphy 5

Some nice moments on the ball but spent most of the game chasing in defensive mode.

Allan Saint-Maximin 6

Surprisingly taken off when he looked like the only capable of getting Newcastle back in it.

Joelinton 3

His goal record meant that him leading the line never boded well as the lone striker. And so it proved. One second half chance but never looked likely other than that.

Subs

Fabian Schar 2 (for Lascelles 46)

Actually made Newcastle look worse after second half appearance.

Miguel Almiron 6 (for Manquillo 65)

Offered something going forward but the game was gone by then.

Andy Carroll 4 (for Saint-Maximin 74)

Managed one attempt that was deflected wide. Other than that managed six touches.
