Newcastle United pick strongest XI as Steve Bruce goes for broke

Newcastle United went for broke in the League Cup by naming a Premier League XI.

Karl Darlow remained in goal while Ciaran Clark, Jonjo Shelvey and Callum Wilson offered a solid spine to his opening line-up.

Bruce also included Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden in his team while Jacob Murphy, Miguel Almiron and Ryan Fraser offered attacking options.

And Bruce named a strong bench with Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll and Matt Ritchie all on standby.

United were bidding for a first semi-final in the League Cup since 1975/76 when they beat Notts County at the same stage.

United : Darlow, Yedlin, Clark, Hayden, Lewis, Fraser, Shelvey, S. Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron, Wilson.

Subs : Gillespie, Carroll, Joelinton, Ritchie, Gayle, Hendrick, Krafth.
