Newcastle United pays tribute to 'devoted supporter' Bob Swinney who collapsed outside St James' Park

Newcastle United have paid tribute to "devoted supporter" Bob Swinney, who sadly died after becoming unwell at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services attended the scene and performed CPR on the fan who collapsed near Gallowgate steps just before 2pm prior to the match.

The "much loved father and grandfather" was taken to the RVI where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.

A statement from the club said: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of devoted NUFC supporter Bob Swinney while he was heading to St. James' Park for Sunday's game.

"He was a very much loved father and grandfather, and our deepest sympathies go to Bob's family at this sad time. Rest in peace, Bob."

Hundreds of NUFC supporters have taken to social media to send their condolences to Bob's loved ones and to celebrate his character.

A spokeswoman for NEAS said: 'We were called at 13:41 to a person unwell outside of St James Park on Sunday 19 December.'

'A crew from St John's Ambulance were already at the scene and we send two resources from inside the stadium including a doctor.'

'We transported one patient to the RVI with the doctor on board.'
