Newcastle United opt for an extended stay in the south to cope with Premier League fixture congestion

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe will keep his team in the south of the country after tonight's clash at St Mary's Stadium in the Premier League. The Magpies' game with Southampton finishes too late to beat Southampton Airport's closure time and a common sense decision to stay on after the game has prevailed.

Howe and his team will prepare in London for the encounter with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon before heading back to the North East. The pair of games could see Newcastle take a huge step towards safety in the top-flight.

And Howe was happy to confirm his team would not face the logistical headache of flying back to Tyneside after the game before a quick turnaround for the game at Stamford Bridge.

Howe said: "We are flying down, we are staying down because we can't fly back. Southampton Airport is closed, so we are staying in London in preparation for Chelsea."

United's fixture with Southampton was rescheduled after it was called off over the new year period. And eyebrows were raised from fans when the Premier League bolted away games at St Mary's and then Everton next Thursday either side of Chelsea
