Newcastle United notes: Fake crowd noise at Wolves and Steve Bruce beats one of Entertainers' records

Jacob Murphy's free-kick was a sight for sore eyes in more ways than one for the Newcastle United faithful.

Back in the day, the Magpies had a plethora of set-piece specialists at their disposal including Alan Shearer, Laurent Robert and Nobby Solano to name a few.

But the modern-day Toon side struggle for identity in this department (along with others) and when they were awarded a late free-kick at Wolves you did wonder whether it was worth getting excited about given how shot-shy Steve Bruce's team have been at times this term.

Murph y did the trick but alarmingly it has been almost a year since a United player netted from a free-kick directly since November 2019!

That came when Jonjo Shelvey netted a peach at West Ham at the London Stadium.

With Shelvey on the sidelines, there is a chance for Murphy to stake his claim.

The set-piece at Wolves also attracted the interest of Miguel Almiron.

Almiron scored a cracker for Atlanta United against New York City late in his career and given that six of his nine goals have come from his trusty left foot perhaps the competition on free-kicks could get interesting.

For all the doom and gloom, Newcastle United have beaten one of the Entertainer's feats

The Magpies have avoided defeat in their first three away games at West Ham, Tottenham and now Wolves.

This is only the second time three opening road trips in the Prem have resulted in them being unscathed after three games.

The last time Newcastle managed such an achievement was back in 2011/12 when they went on to finish fifth in the Premier League under Alan Pardew.

Pardew's side made it five away games in the top-flight unbeaten before losing at Manchester City 3-1.

Even Keegan's Entertainers back in 1995/96 only managed two games unbeaten away from home while the class of 1994/95 stretched to five games like Pardew's side.

Fake crowd noise at Molineux

Wolves - in their wisdom - tried to crank up something of an atmosphere without fans present on Sunday.

The word from most back-room teams is that the more Premier League games reflect a "normal" match day the better.

The fake crowd chants, which were recorded from games pre-Covid 19, were used during the warm-ups and there were one or two bemused looks from Newcastle players.

As the teams walked out Wolves' PA blasted out Energy 52 Cafe Del Mar - to the empty stadium.

Whatever way clubs try to set things up on match days, one thing is getting clearer by the week, football is nothing without fans.
