Newcastle United news as Eddie Howe welcomes selection dilemmas & Benitez linked with Forest

Here are the latest Newcastle United evening headlines on Tuesday, 4 October 2022.

Howe on selection

Eddie Howe says he won't be complaining about having a full squad to pick from ahead of the weekend clash at home to Brentford.

The Magpies face the London side at St James' Park looking to pick up another victory in the Premier League following the excellent 4-1 win over Fulham. The fixture ended in a 3-3 draw for Howe in his first week in charge but this was the game he missed due to Covid.

Howe hopes to have Alexander Isak, Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey available to him soon. When asked if he had a selection headache, Howe said: "I have had the other problem, which is not enough players, so it is good that our squad is looking very strong, with competition in every position."

Benitez

Former Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has been linked with Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest. Steve Cooper is coming under increased pressure at the City Ground with the Reds in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of the table, having been thumped by Leicester City on Monday night.

Forest have picked up just four points from their opening eight games on their return to the top flight, but are just two points adrift of safety. Cooper's side have not won since the second game of the season, a 1-0 win over West Ham United and have lost their last five games on the bounce.

The huge investment into the playing squad this summer has seen question marks arise over Cooper's immediate future at the club, despite being the man to oversee their return to the Premier League. Forest signed 23 players in the summer in an attempt to stay in the top flight, but things have not yet clicked.

Almiron

It is official: Miguel Almiron is Eddie Howe’s latest success story at Newcastle United. A man-of-the-match performance against Fulham was arguably his best in a Toon shirt to date, with two goals inspiring the Magpies to a resounding 4-1 win.

The Paraguayan’s brilliant first evoked memories of Dutch legend Marco van Basten in the Euro 1988 final as he volleyed home to take Bernd Leno by surprise. His second was a poacher’s finish at the back stick just moments before having a well-taken hat-trick goal ruled out for offside.

Any prospects of Almiron scoring a hat-trick were beyond comprehension a few months ago. The 28-year-old appeared destined for the St James’ Park exit earlier this year, lingering on the fringes of Howe’s squad having not started a game in 2022 until March 13.

Maddison

Leicester City hope to tie James Maddison down to a new deal as the Newcastle United target's stock continues to rise following a sensational start to the campaign.

Newcastle had two bids rejected for Maddison last summer and a senior source at Leicester previously stressed to ChronicleLive that the 'manager [Brendan Rodgers] made our position clear - he's not for sale'. That stance has, unsurprisingly, not changed - even as Maddison approaches the final year-and-a-half of his contract.

Leicester will do all that they can to convince Maddison to extend his contract after already losing another key player, Wesley Fofana, to Chelsea last summer. In fact, Maddison, who was already indispensable, has become an even more valued member of the squad this season.
