Newcastle United need to avoid Sheffield United mistake to remain in the Premier League

Newcastle United will have to defy the history books if they are to maintain their Premier League status this season.

The Magpies have not won any of their opening 14 matches, a feat which has only occurred three times before: Swindon Town in 1994, Queens Park Rangers in 2013 and Sheffield United last season.

Of those three teams, not one of them managed to overcome their poor starts as they were all relegated to the Championship, or the First Division as it was known in 1994.

Today, Newcastle will be hoping they can make it 15 th time lucky when they host fellow relegation threatened side Burnley at St. James’ Park.

Sean Dyche’s side also currently occupy a place in the bottom three and have won just once so far this season, which represents another major opportunity for the Magpies to earn their first win.

Eddie Howe’s men missed a big opportunity in the week for a maiden victory this term, as Norwich City held them to a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park, although given Ciaran Clark’s very early red card, Newcastle fought well to earn a point.

From the other three teams who failed to win any of their opening 14 matches, none of them were able to secure a victory at the 15 th attempt.

Swindon earned a 2-2 home draw with Ipswich Town, QPR also secured a point at home as they held Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw, while Sheffield United were defeated 1-0 by Everton.

That is another trend that Newcastle will be hoping to break, as with fixtures against Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United to follow in their next four, points may continue to be at a premium over the Christmas period.
