Newcastle United morning headlines as Wilson’s perfect response, Magpies eye winger

Here are your Newcastle United morning headlines for Monday, 30 November.

Newcastle in race for Plata

Newcastle United are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon winger Gonzalo Plata, according to the Sun via The Boot Room .

The 20-year-old Ecuador international has scored two goals and notched two assists in 25 Primeira Liga appearances since joining Sporting from Independiente del Valle in 2019.

Sporting are reportedly willing to sending Plata out on loan with the ultimate goal of receiving £20million for his signature.

Newcastle will likely face stiff competition, however, with West Ham United, Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion all credited with an interest.

Wilson ‘only getting started’ as form continues

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson says he is only getting started after adding to his goal tally in Friday night’s win at Crystal Palace.

Wilson broke the deadlock on 88 minutes before teeing up Joelinton less than two minutes later with the former Bournemouth frontman moving onto seven goals in nine games since joining Newcastle from the Cherries in the summer.

Wilson is now only one behind the team-high eight Jonjo Shelvey managed last season.

"That's only the start," Wilson told NUFC TV . "I want to keep scoring as many goals as possible.

"I think it's fair to say the lads probably weren't happy with the top scorer being six goals last year. I think I only had eight, myself, last year so it was an unsuccessful season probably from both fronts in front of goal.

"I've come up here to change that and help the other lads get some goals as well. Hence, tonight, Joey's got on the scoresheet from one of my assists. It's nice."

Bruce’s ‘realistic’ approach inspired win over Palace

Joleon Lescott believes Newcastle boss Steve Bruce’s ‘realistic’ approach to last week’s defeat by Chelsea helped the Magpies bounce back against Crystal Palace.

Newcastle were outclassed by the Blues at St James’ Park, managing only one shot on target, but Lescott feels that Bruce’s set-up allowed his side to avoid a heavy defeat , thus keeping their confidence somewhat intact for the trip to Palace.

"I think other managers in the league need to take that approach against the bigger teams," Lescott told Sky Sports' Gillette Soccer Saturday.

"Yeah, it's early in the season and there is an opportunity to recover but you need to be realistic about each and every game.

"Steve Bruce is an astute manager in regards to his know-how so taking that approach against Chelsea didn't work out but it was the right approach to take.

"There was no point going there and getting beat five and six and going into the game with Crystal Palace with no confidence.

"They were favourites going into that game, for me, because Palace didn't have Wilfried Zaha.

"He took the right approach to that game and it paid off."
