Newcastle's telling Steve Bruce response, 'scary' player already found and Graeme Jones' concern

Friday night football was back at St James' Park and it certainly lived up to its billing as Newcastle United and Leeds played out the most entertaining 1-1 draw you are likely to see this season.

It was a game that could easily have got away from Newcastle after another poor start in front of their home supporters but, crucially, Leeds did not put the game out of sight after Raphinha's opener in the 13th minute.

As the crowd made their feelings clear with a series of anti-Bruce chants, Newcastle's players did not crumble and, in actual fact, the hostility from the terraces seemed to shake them into life along with a crucial tactical change.

Graeme Jones was sat alongside an analyst upstairs for the first half but it was not long until the concerned assistant made his way down to the bench as Leeds dominated possession and territory.

Newcastle had started the game with a back five - Isaac Hayden again filled in at right-sided centre-back - but Leeds were finding it all too easy to exploit the space between the Magpies' midfield and defence.

In a tense battle, Saint-Maximin's equaliser hauled his team back into the game but he could not find a winner.

It left the French star to reflect on his disappointment with the former Nice man eager to turn things around.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Saint-Maximin said: "We are really disappointed tonight because the team gave everything to win this game.

"It was really hard to start the game 1-0 down against Leeds because they are a tough team."
