Newcastle United missed out on one of Europe's 'most exciting' defenders

Newcastle United missed out one of Europe's 'most exciting' talents in Kristoffer Ajer.

That's the view of Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who is convinced the 23-year-old has the potential to develop into one of the continent's leading defenders.

Newcastle were linked with a move for Ajer earlier in the summer, but it was the Bees who would go on to agree a deal with Celtic.

The Norwegian international agreed a five-year deal in the capital, and was previously described by Frank as his 'first choice' target.

Steve Bruce reportedly remains in the market for a new defender in this window, having also missed out on a deal for Axel Tuanzebe.

The United head coach was critical of his side's defending in Sunday's defeat to West Ham at St James' Park.

Meanwhile, Ajer made his competitive Brentford debut in Friday night's opening-day home victory over Arsenal.

Speaking to Norwegian outlet TV 2, Frank has heaped praise on his summer signing and outlined why the club moved for the defender.

The Brentford boss said: "I think Kristoffer is one of the most exciting centre-halves in Europe.

"He has a huge potential, and his profile fits perfectly with what we are looking for in a centre-half.

"He can carry the ball forward with him, hit passes through joints and be very calm.

"We hope we can raise those skills further, and get him to make even better decisions with the ball."
