Newcastle United manager search: Lee Charnley returns to UK after series of European meetings

Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley has returned to the UK after spending time in Europe this week.

With the Magpies searching for a new manager and summer signings, it is understood Charnley has held meetings with a host of agents and contacts.

Charnley appointed former reserve-team boss Ben Dawson as caretaker manager this week, but the search for has continued.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, but United have other targets on their list.

Charnley is working closely with head of recruitment Steve Nickson to find the man who will dovetail into the current structure for transfers at United.

And this is set to continue to include finding younger players that will offer resale value.

United have stayed tight-lipped on their next move, but did release a statement on Thursday as the players returned to pre-season training.

It read: "With the process of appointing a new manager on-going, Academy head of coaching Ben Dawson and Under-23s head coach Neil Redfearn will be overseeing first team training."
