Newcastle United 'make breakthrough' in negotiations for South American wonderkid

Newcastle United have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of Peruvian Rodrigo Vilca, according to well-sourced reports in his homeland.

After substantial negotiations over the structure of the deal Vilca's club Deportivo Municipal have accepted United's proposal and the player is set to travel to England in "the early days of next month" according to RPP.

They state the midfielder will play his final game in the Peruvian championship on Wednesday against Universitario de Deportes before moving to England.

The development plan Newcastle rolled out for the player - which was detailed in ChronicleLive last week - will see the management assess Vilca in the first weeks of his career in England before deciding whether he needs to be loaned out.

Newcastle see Vilca, who will cost less than £200,000, as a long-term project and he qualifies for a work permit as he has a Spanish passport.

Recently called up by the Peru national side, he is a playmaker who can slot in as a number ten.

United are still looking at their options in the final days of the transfer window but the lion's share of the budget has been spent and other deals may depend on players being sold.
