Newcastle United linked with Sporting Lisbon star Matheus Nunes amid talk of two Celtic deals

Here is your 4am Newcastle United digest.

Sporting Lisbon star linked with Newcastle move

The Portuguese media have linked Newcastle United with a move for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Reports last month claimed that United tried to sign the 22-year-old midfielder on loan in January, but the Portuguese champions rejected that offer.

They would go on to win the league title but have resigned themselves to losing Matheus Nunes according to new reports in The Record, which claim Sporting have picked out Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte as a replacement.

Sport Witness translated the story - which can be read here - and while it reports that Nunes has English clubs ‘closing the siege' for him, Newcastle United are the only side mentioned.

Newcastle linked with Celtic defender

Jack Hendry is a name that has cropped up in the past in terms of Newcastle United interest.

The Magpies were interested in the Scotland international back in 2018, only for Hendry to join Celtic instead from Dundee.

He has since spent this season on loan at Belgian side Oostende and after impressing, 90min.com report that Oostende have agreed to sign him permanently for just £2.6m.

However, their report goes onto claim that Hendry will leave this summer as soon as he's signed, with Newcastle, Burnley and Crystal Palace said to be interested.

Celtic urged to sign the 'next Fraser Forster' from Newcastle United

Freddie Woodman could be the 'next Fraser Forster' if he joins Celtic from Newcastle this summer.

That is the verdict of former Scotland and Rangers manager Alex McLeish who insists the Magpies' goalkeeper reminds him of the former Celtic great.

“When I think of Woodman, Fraser Forster was the name that immediately sprang to mind," McLeish told Football Insider.

"A star was born in Celtic colours. He could be the next Forster.

“Maybe they don’t want to flirt with foreign goalkeepers at the moment. It is difficult for them to come into the league and just to be sensational stars straight away.

“It can take a wee bit of time in terms of language, the speed of the game, and the robustness of the game as well. That’s why maybe they’ve looked at the homegrown guy.

“He’s no stranger to the Scottish League.”
