Newcastle United legends Alan Shearer and Rob Lee applaud Aaron Hughes for his 23-year career

Newcastle United legends Rob Lee and Alan Shearer have passed on their best wishes to Aaron Hughes following the defender's retirement.

The 39-year-old has announced he's hanging up his boots following his release from Hearts at the end of the last season, and a final inclusion in the Northern Ireland squad.

Hughes came through the ranks at Newcastle - joining in 1996, and going onto play over 200 games before leaving for Aston Villa in 2005.

He was part of the squad that reached the FA Cup final in 1988 and 1999, as well as the Sir Bobby Robson side that challenged for the Premier League title and took on Europe's best in the Champions League.

Former team-mates and United legends have taken to social media to respond to Hughes' retirement.

"Good luck to Aaron Hughes in your retirement," Rob Lee wrote on Twitter. "It started with me at Toon , and finished with my son at Hearts !! Wow! That’s a long long career."

While the club's record top scorer, Alan Shearer wrote: "A brilliant career Aaron. Well done mate."

Hughes confirmed his retirement on social media: " So my professional playing career has finally come to an end and I’m officially retired.

"Not sure where the time went, but what an incredible journey it’s been

"Thank you to everyone who helped and supported me along the way. I have quite literally lived the dream! Thank you."
