Newcastle United legend David Ginola met his girlfriend and 'died for 12 minutes' on the same day

David Ginola has opened up about his heart attack, which left him dying on the pitch for 12 minutes.

He said being on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! has made him realise that he should talk about it and get therapy.

He also revealed he met the 'love of his life' on the same memorable day.

Pop star and presenter Frankie Bridge asked David if he’s had therapy after dying on the football pitch: “I should have. When I was out of the hospital, it was the first thing they asked me to do.

"They said, ‘You will not have all the answers to your questions, at least go and talk.’ I will get some.”

David admitted at first he didn't want to talk about it.

Frankie said: “It would make me happy if you did.”

David said: “I will, I think it’s necessary, it’s very important. Just to clarify things and say, ‘Wow, OK.’

"I'm not bothered about me, I'm bothered about the pain it will cause everyone around."

He added he doesn’t have a fear of death: “I guess not anymore.”

Frankie in the Telegraph said: “He’s a man of few words, he has his pride.

"For him to open up and say, ‘Actually, you know, I’ve kind of learnt while I’ve been in here, that that maybe is something I should do, I thought was amazing.”

David later opened up about how he met his girlfriend on the day, which was the 19th May 2016.

“I met my girlfriend the day I died. We’ve been together six years. We swapped numbers and were going to arrange to go to a restaurant the next day.

“She called me in the morning and she said, ‘Did you have a good sleep?’ I said, ‘Very few hours, but it was fine.’ In the afternoon, I died on the football pitch.”

In the Telegraph David said: “One minute I met an amazing woman, and then my life changed.

"If the doctors hadn’t saved me, then I could never have had the special relationship that I have now.”

He continued: “I didn’t have my phone with me. After two weeks, I had my phone back and I had a message, I had flashes. I remembered this brunette, but I couldn’t see the face, couldn’t remember everything.

“I had this message say, ‘David, how are you, I’m worried blah blah blah…’

He added in the Telegraph: “My girlfriend probably didn’t know what to think, she didn’t see me for ages after we first met, maybe she thought I wasn’t interested, but actually I had been recovering in hospital.”

Emmerdale star Danny Miller in the Telegraph said: “It was love at first sight and in fact he actually had love at second sight as he couldn’t remember what she looked like.

"You’d watch that in a film and you’d go, ‘That was a great film, but it can’t be true.’ It’s what dreams are made of.”

David admitted: “You meet this girl and in the afternoon you died, it’s crazy.”

The 54 year old former footballer had a heart attack when playing during a charity match in France in 2016.

He suffered a cardiac arrest during the game and was administered CPR on the pitch.

I'm A Celebrity continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
