Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer's 'urgent message' to football fans

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has echoed the advice of the government and health experts by urging everyone to stay home to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The global death toll for the disease now exceeds 30,000, with nations across the world implementing lockdowns in a bit to stem the spread of the virus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson - who is self-isolating at his Downing Street residence after exhibiting symptoms - has implemented a number of strict measures in an attempt to prevent the transmission of the disease to the more vulnerable sections of society.

The steps have also been taken in the hope of easing the pressure on the NHS which is battling to cope with the rising number of cases up and down the country.

The message to stay home has been repeated by a number of high-profile figures and celebrities over recent days on social media.

And the Premier League has highlighted the importance of this message by sharing a video of Shearer re-iterating the steps people need to take.

The Toon legend said: "To help save lives, you must stay home.

"Only leave your home to buy essential food, medicine or individual exercise, and always stay two metres apart.

"This is an urgent message. Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives. Thank you."
