Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer 'remains cautious' about the latest takeover talk

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer insists he remains 'cautious' about the latest takeover talk until a deal is confirmed.

The Magpies have edged closer to a new takeover deal after the Premier League began assessing the credentials of a new chairman.

News emerged on Tuesday that PCP Capital Partners' takeover bid for the club has reached the Premier League's Owners and Directors' Test stage.

The bid, spearheaded by financier Amanda Staveley and also involving the Reuben brothers, Simon and David, is backed by the mega-rich Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

Newcastle fans are excited for an era without Mike Ashley at the helm, after several false takeover dawns in recent years.

And it is those false dawns why Shearer is 'refusing to get excited' about a takeover just yet.

"Like so many Newcastle fans, I refuse to get excited until the sale of the club actually goes through," Shearer told The Sun.

"I’m reluctant to get my hopes up — we’ve been here before, so what is the point?

"There are still questions to be answered. We are yet to hear about the finance of the deal and still haven’t heard anything from Mike Ashley or the prospective buyers.

"With Ashley, once it gets close he may well try to move the goalposts. So until the deal is done, I remain cautious."
