Newcastle United land tough FA Cup third round draw

Newcastle United have landed a tough trip to holders Arsenal in the FA Cup third round.

The Magpies will begin their FA Cup campaign against Mikel Arteta's side on a ground where they haven't won since 2010 - and have suffered six straight defeats. They haven't scored in North London since a 4-1 defeat in 2014.

The 14 times winners will provide a stern test for Newcastle, who have enjoyed fortunate draws under Steve Bruce until now.

It is only the second time Bruce has drawn a Premier League club in the FA Cup since he took over, with matches against lower league opposition until their quarter-final clash with Manchester City last season.

Arteta's side have made a poor start to the season and sit a place behind the Magpies.

Bruce will have to decide how to prioritise the Cup. The match is due to be played on the first weekend of the New Year, with United signing off their Premier League Christmas programme on January 2 against Leicester.

Newcastle's third round game is due to played on January 9., before a midweek game against Sheffield United on January 12.

Last season the Newcastle boss played strong sides in the early rounds despite a congested fixture list.
