Newcastle United job handed to former Hamilton Accies star on interim basis

Former Hamilton Accies and Clyde forward Graeme Jones has been handed the reins at Newcastle United on a caretaker basis following Steve Bruce's departure.

The Magpies, who are under new Saudi Arabian-led owners following Mike Ashley's sale of the club last week, have parted company with Bruce by mutual consent.

And Jones will now take charge of the side for Saturday's English Premier League clash away to Crystal Palace.

The 51-year-old had a short spell at New Douglas Park in 2005-06, before injury ended his playing career and he started his coaching journey as assistant to Billy Reid. He had previous spent a season at Clyde in 2005 and had a stint with St Johnstone a few years earlier.

Since then he has gone on to become assistant to Roberto Martinez at Swansea, Wigan and Everton, as well as the Belgian national team for a spell.

Jones was also part of Gareth Southgate's coaching team as England reached the final of Euro 2020 this summer, so has a wealth of experience to call upon.

Following Bruce's departure, a statement from Newcastle confirmed the interim arrangements as they hunt for a new manager, with candidates including Paulo Fonseca, Roberto Martínez, Frank Lampard, Lucien Favre, Eddie Howe and even Rangers boss Steven Gerrard being mooted as potential replacements.

The statement read: "Graeme Jones will lead the team on an interim basis, starting with Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, and will be supported by the coaching team of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.

"The process of recruiting a new head coach is under way and an appointment will be announced in due course.

"The club will not be making further comment at this time."

Jones isn't the only former player at the club to have played north of the border, with ex-Motherwell goalkeeper Mark Gillespie among the first team squad on Tyneside.
