Newcastle United international round-up as Hendrick suffers heartbreak at hands of Ronaldo

The Premier League has been paused for the first international break of the season and three Newcastle United players have already been in action for their countries.

Miguel Almiron was blocked from linking up with Paraguay as he would have had to quarantine upon his return, but five players have briefly left Tyneside for international duty.

Magpies midfielder Jeff Hendrick is with the Republic of Ireland, defender Jamal Lewis has been called up by Northern Ireland and winger Ryan Fraser is representing Scotland.

Defenders Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth were called up by Switzerland and Sweden respectively.

Here is a round-up of how Newcastle's internationals are faring so far:

Jeff Hendrick (Republic of Ireland)

Republic of Ireland suffered heartbreak in their World Cup qualifier against Portugal, being condemned to defeat by two late strikes by Manchester United's new signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Hendrick completed 90 minutes in midfield, competing against Premier League duo Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva.

His blushes were spared early on, when he gave away a penalty but saw goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu deny Ronaldo from 12-yards with an excellent save.

Ryan Fraser (Scotland)

Fraser played 90 minutes but could not prevent Scotland slipping to a 2-0 defeat to Denmark in a World Cup qualifier.

Initially deployed as a forward, the 27-year-old looked brighter when he was moved to wing-back and came close to scoring late on.

Fabian Schar (Switzerland)

There was one happy Magpie last night, as Schar's Switzerland secured a 2-1 friendly win over Greece.

Playing in the centre of a back three, he completed 90 minutes as goals from Steven Zuber and Ruben Vargas clinched victory..

Who is playing tonight?

The remaining two international Magpies are in action tonight and both can be watched live on Sky Sports.

Jamal Lewis will be hoping to feature for Northern Ireland in their World Cup qualifier against Lithuania, whereas Emil Krafth's Sweden will face a tough test in their qualifier against Spain.

What about this weekend?

Hendrick and the Republic of Ireland are back in World Cup qualifying action this weekend, facing Azerbaijan at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Scotland also have another qualifier on Saturday and Fraser will be hoping to be handed another start for their clash with Moldova.

Schar could return to action on Sunday, when Switzerland will continue their efforts to secure a place at the 2022 World Cup with a stern test against Italy.

Krafth and Lewis could be involved in friendlies on Sunday, with Sweden set to host Uzbekistan and Northern Ireland scheduled to face Estonia.

Who is playing next week?

The international action does not stop this week and there could be Newcastle players in action again on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Hendrick could be involved for the Republic of Ireland next Tuesday in their World Cup qualifier against Moldova and Fraser may also be in action on the same night, when Scotland take on Austria in a qualifier.

Club teammates may then come face-to-face in a World Cup qualifier next Wednesday, when Northern Ireland and Switzerland meet in a game that could see Schar and Lewis up against each other.

Krafth's final game on international duty for the current break may come against Greece, who Sweden face in a World Cup qualifier on the same night that Northern Ireland host Switzerland.

Are any players involved at youth level?

Oisin McEntee and Joel Green will be representing Newcastle's academy on international duty over the next week.

McEntee, a defender who is currently on loan at Greenock Morton, has been called up by Republic of Ireland under-21s and could feature in their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Luxembourg. Their meeting with the latter takes place tomorrow afternoon and they will meet the former next Tuesday.

Green could also be in action tomorrow as he is part of the Wales under-18 squad and they are preparing to take on England.
