Ryan Fraser injury blow revealed as Newcastle face selection headache ahead of Man Utd

Ryan Fraser withdrew from Scotland duty with a 'knock' as the winger becomes the latest selection doubt for Newcastle United ahead of their daunting trip to Manchester United.

The 27-year-old dropped out of the national squad along with Kenny McLean and Nathan Patterson on Monday ahead of the World Cup qualifier in Austria.

No reason was given at the time of announcement, but Scotland boss Steve Clarke has since confirmed Fraser's withdrawal was prompted by an injury complaint suffered in training.

Clarke told reporters: "Unfortunately Ryan Fraser picked up a knock in training which again with the short turnaround just means there's no point in taking him.

"He wouldn't be ready for the game."

Fraser's withdrawal will inevitably raise questions over his availability for the Magpies' trip to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Steve Bruce is already facing up to a number of possible absences as Newcastle attempt to pick up their first victory of the season on what is likely to be Cristiano Ronaldo's second debut for the Red Devils.

Miguel Almiron is facing up to a possible ban after the Premier League blocked the attacker from linking up with Paraguay for international duty.

Callum Wilson limped off in United's draw with Southampton before the international break with a thigh injury, and no update has since been given on the striker's recovery.

Bruce has also been deprived of the services of Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey in recent weeks, and both are still doubts to be available for selection.

The potential absences could hand a starting spot to either Dwight Gayle or Joelinton in attack, and Jeff Hendrick in midfield.
