Newcastle United identify Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard as 'top target'

Newcastle United have reportedly identified Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard as their 'top target' for the upcoming transfer window.

That's according to the Daily Star, who claim Magpies head coach Steve Bruce has held a series of video meetings with the club's transfer team regarding the 22-year-old over the past few weeks.

Edouard has impressed at Parkhead since arriving from Paris St Germain in 2017, initially on loan before sealing a club-record £9m move.

The French striker has already netted 62 times, and his value has soared with his performances both domestically and in Celtic's European encounters.

The same title claims the Magpies will face competition for Edouard's signature, with French outfit Lyon expected to make a move if they lose former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele in the summer.

Everton are also reportedly monitoring the availability of the 22-year-old.

Bruce is understood to also hold an interest in Rangers' striker Alfredo Morelos, but it is Edouard who is believed to be the club's priority target in the upcoming window.

The Magpies' head coach is confident the club will land "four quality signings" in the summer, with much of the legwork on deals understood to have been done already.

Bruce took the calculated gamble of not pushing for temporary, expensive fixes in the January window in an attempt to land some more exciting targets in the summer.

A striker and a box-to-box midfielder are top of the wishlist and Newcastle are looking to Europe to build around the experienced domestic core they have retained and re-signed.
