Newcastle United hopes of signing Conor Gallagher fading as England international eyes Chelsea stay

Newcastle United transfer target Conor Gallagher is hoping to get the green light to remain at Chelsea under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Since his return to the club's Cobham training base there is also talk that he could be offered a new contract at Stamford Bridge. The England international has been on Newcastle's wish-list on loan but the Blues want to take a good look at Gallagher.

There is also talk emerging that Chelsea are no longer interested in loaning Gallagher and if he did leave it would be for a big fee.

Gallagher stated after England's 7-0 hammering against North Macedonia at Old Trafford in the European Championship qualifiers that he was keen to impress Pochettino. The Epsom-born midfielder said then: "I will just relax and get ready for pre-season. Mauricio Pochettino is a top manager and I am looking forward to working with him."

The Magpies first looked at the possibility of signing former Crystal Palace loanee Gallagher last summer but was afforded another opportunity at Chelsea. The attacking midfield star ended up making 33 appearances in the Premier League for the Blues, scoring three goals, as well as making eight appearances in the Champions League.

Pochettino, who Newcastle will face in pre-season during their tour of the United States, has spoken to the club's media channel in his first week in charge. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss said: "It is exciting for us and what we want is to bring happiness again to this great football club. We will work hard, play in a way the fans can enjoy football."

Newcastle have moved to strengthen their midfield options already this summer with the signing of Italy international Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.
