Newcastle United hit by striker blow for Crystal Palace clash

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has been dealt a fresh injury blow after being ruled out of the trip to Crystal Palace.

The former West Ham and Liverpool centre-forward was not pictured in training in the build-up to the game on Wednesday and it has been confirmed that Carroll has suffered a calf injury.

Carroll has made nine appearances in all competitions this term but the knock reduces Bruce's options for the encounter at Selhurst Park.

The good news for Bruce is that Callum Wilson is back from a hamstring injury but the game may come too early for Dwight Gayle, despite the ex-Palace man back in training.

Gayle has bounced back from a pre-season injury and is yet to appear this term despite some fine form after lockdown.

Speaking about Wilson's return, Bruce said: "As we speak now he is fit and has trained all week. We didn't think we could risk him (against Chelsea).

"He has made a difference for us with six goals so we are delighted.
